Shamardal’s Delectation Breaks Through

Mark Smith – Saturday, 11 April 2015

Talented three-year-old gelding Delectation has tested the patience of his supporters several times in his short career but he was on his best behavior in Saturday’s $500,000 Group II Arrowfield 3yo Sprint (1200m) at Randwick.

Ridden by Hugh Bowman for champion trainer Chris Waller, Delectation dispatched the early leaders, Golden Slipper winner Mossfun, Nostradamus and Rubick but came under pressure from the fast finishing Sebring filly Bring Me The Maid whose final lunge fell a nose short. (photos Lisa Grimm).

Promising Redoute’s Choice colt Rekindled Power came from last to finish three-quarters of a length behind the second placegetter.

It was the first stakes win for the son of Shamardal (USA) who had second placings behind Brazen Beau in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and to Scissor Kick in the Group II Hobartville Stakes.

It takes his overall record to 4 wins, 4 seconds and 1 third from 14 starts for earnings of $759,775.

Waller was full of praise for the ride of Bowman.

‘He’s been a very frustrating horse to say the least but it was a good win today,” he said.

‘Hugh Bowman’s done a fantastic job with this horse.

‘He got him to settle beautifully today.”

‘I think there’s a good 1200m sprint in him in the spring.

‘I wouldn’t be tempted by the Stradbroke (Handicap) because I just think the 1400(m) is beyond his best.

‘His run in the Newmarket was good behind Brazen Beau, Chautauqua and those horses. He’s a 1200-metre horse, we know that now.’

Bred by Greg Perry, Delectation was a $250,000 purchase by owner, Macau businessman CC Lai, from the Vinery draft at the 2013 Inglis Easter Yearling sale.

He is the first foal of the imported More Than Ready mare Grace And Power (USA) a Listed Stakes-winner who was runner-up in the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Grace And Power has a 2yo unnamed filly by Redeoute’s Choice and a weanling filly by Congrats (USA). She was bred back to Exceed And Excel last spring.

Delectation becomes the 74th stakes-winner for the former Darley shuttler Shamardal who stands at Kildangan Stud at a fee of €70,000.
