There is plenty that happens before a horse ever reaches the winning post.
For Let It Beel, Friday’s victory at Sale brought together the work of Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, the team at Moody Racing, jockey Luke Nolen, Wylie Dalziel, his fellow owners and Rosemont Stud—the farm that bred him and remained part of his ownership journey.
There is also some serious blood behind him.
Let It Beel is by Savabeel, the outstanding Waikato Stud stallion who became one of New Zealand’s most influential sires, out of the Fastnet Rock mare Let It Rock. Savabeel’s passing marked the loss of a remarkable stallion, but horses such as Let It Beel continue to carry his influence onto the racetrack.
For Rosemont Stud, there was another connection to celebrate. They bred Let It Beel and stayed in the ownership alongside Dalziel Racing and a terrific group of owners who have been able to follow his development from the beginning.
At Sale Turf Club, all that work came down to finding one opportunity.
Luke Nolen settled Let It Beel back in the field and kept him close to the running rail. While Crocodile began sweeping around the field approaching the straight, Nolen stayed patient and waited for something to appear ahead of him.
Then came the opening.
Inside the final 250 metres, Let It Beel found the split and went through it. Crocodile had built momentum out wide and moved up to challenge, but Let It Beel wasn’t finished.
He lifted.
The two drove towards the winning post together, with Let It Beel finding enough to prevail by a head in the Johnson Plumbing & Gas BM62 Handicap.
It was a satisfying result not simply because of how he won, but because of how many people had contributed to getting him there.
From Rosemont Stud breeding him and remaining in the ownership, through the work of Peter Moody, Katherine Coleman and the Moody Racing team, to Luke Nolen making the most of his opportunity in the straight, Friday’s result belonged to an entire group.
Most importantly, it belonged to the owners who continue to share the journey with us.
