Military Base began sharply and placed himself among the first horses away before settling into the trail behind the early leaders.
As positions changed around him, he moved from the leading group into third and then fourth, conserving his energy while the race developed. Luke Nolen remained patient, keeping the Bivouac gelding tucked away until the straight presented the right opportunity.
Earlier in the afternoon, Autumn Lover had already opened the winners’ account for Dalziel Racing. Military Base was about to build on it.
With 300 metres remaining, the field began to fan across the track. Military Base appeared on the scene, worked through his gears and established the advantage near the 250-metre mark.
Toll Puddle launched a late challenge, but Military Base continued to find. He held his rival safely to the line to record the second victory of his career.
This win showed clear progression from his maiden success. He broke cleanly, accepted his position, waited for the straight and finished the task when the race opened in front of him.
That progression is also a credit to the work taking place away from race day. Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman have continued to place Military Base where he can learn and develop, while the Moody Racing staff, Wylie Dalziel and his owners have supported the process behind each step forward.
