Darwin — Patriotic King thrilled connections and fans alike on Friday with a tough and classy win in the Sportsbet Handicap (Bm58, 1000m).
From the jump, Jarrod Todd had the gelding travelling comfortably from barrier three despite carrying a hefty 60.5kg. Todd positioned Patriotic King right on the speed, conserving enough energy to strike when it mattered. As the field straightened, he pressed the button and the son of Starspangledbanner lengthened beautifully, surging clear of Tigers Roar and Cee Pee One to score in commanding fashion.
The win was the culmination of a consistent run of efforts in the Top End. Patriotic King had been building towards a breakthrough, regularly featuring in the placings, and punters who kept the faith were rewarded with a performance that showed his true ability.
“He’s been knocking on the door and today he put it all together,” said Wylie Dalziel. “It’s fantastic to see him break through up here — Gary has him going beautifully, and Jarrod rode him to perfection.”
The race itself was run at a genuine tempo, with Tigers Roar setting the pace and the rest of the field strung out early. But once they balanced for home, Patriotic King’s superior turn of foot shone through.
The victory underlines the strength of the Clarke–Dalziel partnership in Darwin, which continues to deliver results week after week.
